As part of our Supported Housing program we offer integrated mental health services to individuals with serious mental illness or SMI, also called severe, persistent mental illness or SPMI, living in housing owned or managed by ShelterCare, or apartments in the community. Optional mental health supportive services include individual and group therapy, mental health care coordination and prompts to take medications.
The Garden Place Program is a secure residential treatment facility for adults with severe psychiatric disabilities. Garden Place provides a home-like setting and individualized, focused care, with a goal of helping individuals transition to living independently in the community.
Homelessness and a lack of safe and stable housing can negatively impact health. Once people are stably housed, formerly homeless individuals find themselves in a much better place to address their personal issues—and on their own terms. Housing stability also allows people with chronic diseases, such as diabetes and asthma, to have better success managing their illness. Here are some of the ways ShelterCare helps our program participants improve their physical health.
- Help establishing a primary care provider
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Assistance and advocacy with community service providers
Common barriers to housing include high application fees and deposits, lack of ID, insufficient income, past evictions, criminal history or recovery. ShelterCare has a variety of services that help our clients overcome these barriers, including short-term financial assistance, skills training, and landlord mediation.
Housing is only part of the solution for ending the cycle of homelessness. Helping people build the necessary skills to maintain stability and independence, such as financial literacy and goal-setting, are also important services that help our clients live full, rewarding lives.
- Supported Employment Program
- Instruction in money-management skills
- Skills training for daily living activities such as housekeeping and shopping
