EMERGENCY SERVICES:
Homelessness Prevention Program

ShelterCare's Homelessness Prevention Program, begun in July 2006, helps families with children who are at risk of homelessness to remain in stable housing. The program provides minimal financial assistance for rent or utility bills, coupled with a year of appropriate one-on-one assistance and training, to help keep these families in their homes and out of the shelter system.

Nearly 20% of the callers to the centralized waiting list for shelter in Lane County are people who are anticipating losing their housing in the near future and are searching for options. For families with children, homelessness is the worst possible outcome when earlier intervention services could effectively prevent a housing crisis. By keeping these families in their homes rather than having them enter a homeless shelter, the community saves significant dollars and parents and children avoid the extreme stress brought on by being homeless.

Families are provided with assistance based on their needs, including:

  • small amounts of financial assistance to help pay for rent or utility bills
  • assistance with sustainable budget planning
  • case management support for a year to ensure the family remains in stable housing
  • individual advocacy for families with community services
  • skill-building workshops
  • employment support

The funds are limited and assistance is based on specific criteria.
