Philosophy of Treatment
Sheltercare programs use a Recovery-Focused Strength-Case-Management, Person-Centered approach in work with program participants
Sheltercare mental health programs use Trauma-sensitive or Trauma-informed care. Emerging as a prevalent "movement" in mental health treatment, trauma-sensitive care acknowledges that the central cause for disabling symptoms of psychiatric distress is a history of trauma. The reoccurrence of trauma through memory or re-traumatization is something care-givers seek to avoid. In order for individuals to heal or recover, therapeutic environments must be trauma-sensitive and caregivers must be trauma-informed. Program participants are given maximum personal choices about types of Activities and services to use without coercion.
