"The Afiya Apartments respresent a huge investment in the city of Springfield, and begins to fill a huge need for affordable housing for vulnerable members of our community."
With those words, ShelterCare's Executive Director, Susan Ban, presided over the opening ceremony for 16 new one-bedroom apartments for low-income individuals with pshchiatric disabilities. In addition to a safe place to live, residents will benefit from supportive services provided by ShelterCare that includes case-management counseling, skills training and medication monitoring.
Below are photographs of the Afiya Apartments Project as it unfolded. Today, Afiya is home to 16 people and serves as the first phase of a planned urban village between Springfield's redevelopment and nearby residential areas.
